Saying good-by
September 10, 2008
Dear Friends of Sunnivue Farm, In my last message I explained that the farmers at Sunnivue have decided to change the farm’s direction by selling most of the herd of cows as well as the quota that authorizes the farm to ship milk, thus getting out of the dairy business. The date for the auction of the cows has now been set, and we want you to know about it, in case you would like to attend, in case you know of others who would like to be there or who may be interested in adding some wonderful cows to their herd, or just in case you may want to think about the cows and the farmers at that time. The auction will take place at the Walker Dairy Sale Arena (519-765-2406) on Highway 3 just east of Aylmer on Friday, September 19, at 12:00 noon. In her introduction to the sales catalogue describing the herd, Ellinor thanks all those who have helped along the way. She describes breeding animals as being like “an endless relay walk,” and expresses gratitude for having been allowed to be a part of it, and gratitude “towards the animals who came to live with us.” She mentions her hope that they will have a positive impact on other herds, and adds, “Treat them well, with kindness, and they will shine in the love you give them for years to come.” I hope to see many of you at Sunnivue this Saturday. You may want to take the opportunity to say good-by to the cows who will be leaving, and you will also want to visit and appreciate the farm store, which goes from strength to strength as the harvest season advances. The tomato plants are producing abundantly, and the ground cherries which have been so popular in past years have re-appeared. Staples are in good supply, including more kinds of squashes each week, salad and cooking greens, beets, onions, carrots, and much more. Besides, there are some unexpected treats like okra and cantaloupe and fennel, as well as eggs, breads, meats, and supplementary organic supplies such as coffee, honey and maple syrup from other sources. Please watch for news of work days. Dagmar hopes to plan several over the next few weeks, when there will be an opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and the contact with the earth while offering much-needed and much-appreciated help to our farmers at Sunnivue. With best wishes, Sally (for Sunnivue Farm)
